In each of us is a seed of wanderlust: a longing for a home to which we have not yet found the way. "These things – the beauty, the memory of our own past – ... are not the thing itself; they are only the scent of a flower we have not found, the echo of a tune we have not yet heard, news from a country we have never yet visited." 1
My work is narrative, and the viewer is invited into the story: I hope that each painting will become like a favorite book, which can be viewed and enjoyed repeatedly, each time revealing new details. I want viewers to catch a glimpse of a new place; to travel somewhere they've never been; to feel the light, smell the air, and feel connected, as if they were there themselves. |
I want the viewer to experience emotion, to pine for this “secret we cannot hide and cannot tell, though we desire to do both. We cannot tell it because it is a desire for something that has never actually appeared in our experience. We cannot hide it because our experience is constantly suggesting it, and we betray ourselves like lovers at the mention of a name. Our commonest expedient is to call it beauty and behave as if that had settled the matter." 1
Exploring these themes of wanderlust, narrative, memory, nostalgia and longing has lead to different series of works. The intuitive process of painting is always an integral part of the finished pieces. 1) C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory |
